It is well known that the shark has a very strong immune system, with a very high resistance to disease and cancer. For many years Norwegian fisherman used the oil extracted from the liver of deep sea sharks to heal wounds, relieve respiratory tract infections and to regain their strength after illness. Research has shown shark liver oil to contain a range of beneficial lipids: alkoxyglycerols, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E, various essential fatty acids, and very high conecentrations of Squalene.

Squalene is a non-saturated isoprenoid which occurs naturally in small amounts in human tissue, but at high levels in the liver of the deep-sea shark (where it comprises over 80% of the oil). Squalene attaches hydrogen from water and acids in order to stabilise, releasing oxygen. The release of oxygen enhances the metabolism, promoting the good health of all cells which use oxygen. Squalene is a potent anti-oxidant, scavenging free radicals before they can subject cells to harmful oxidation reactions. By providing oxygen, Squalene protects the cells from oxidative damage under oxygen-deficient conditions. Anti-oxidants are an important health supplement because they protect the body from the effects of premature ageing, and in some cases, the onset of cancers.

In addition to its anti-oxidant properties, Squalene has many other benefits:

lowers LDL and total cholesterol; this reduces the build-up of atherosclerotic placques which lead to coronary heart disease and heart attack
inhibits clot formation (by decreasing platelet aggregation) which helps protect the body from strokes and thrombosis
enhances immune response
